1. What should I pay attention to before surgery?
- The doctor will do a routine exam of your blood, dejecta, piss and electrocardiogram
- In order to prevent from surgical site infection, we will shave the hair of your surgical site and ask you to wash it before the surgery
- The night before surgery, we will follow the prescription to give you enemas to remove the content of intestine
- In order to prevent from vomiting during and after surgery, we will ask you to stop eating anything from the midnight before the surgery, including water
- We will instruct you to practice deep breath before the surgery to help your lung function recover after surgery
(Correct and efficient coughing method: Please put your hands on your abdomen, breath the air in your abdomen while breathing in to make your abdomen sunken and relax while breathing out slowly. Don’t be hasty.)
- Take at least five deep breaths per hour after surgery, breath in the air from your nose and hold for two seconds, and then breath out from your mouth. Keep doing this and cough after three deep breaths to help clean the mucus from you lung.
- You should do ankle exercise before the surgery. You should also do the exercise after the surgery to enhance leg muscle to stretch and help the blood in legs to circulate back to heart
- Begin a balanced diet to increase physical strength
2. What should I prepare on the day of surgery?
- We will put on an operating coat for you on the day of surgery and ask you to remove accessories, false teeth, glass eye, watches, and hairclips to prevent from fortuitous accident when anaesthetized.
- Women should not wear make-up or nail polish on the day to help observe your status during the surgery.
- Please go to toilet to empty your bladder before the surgery
- The doctor will give you an intravenous drip in the morning to supply the water you need
- Our staff members will push you to the operating room with a hospital bed
3. What should I pay attention to after surgery?
- Due to general anaesthesia, you will stay in recovery room for observation until your status is stabilized, then you will be sent back to the ward
- If you have a spinal anaesthesia, you have to lie in bed without a pillow for 6 – 8 hours to prevent from the anaesthesia site bleeding, we will help you piss and other activities in your everyday life
- In order to avoid vomiting caused by anaesthesia, you are not allowed to eat. We will give you an intravenous drip to supply water. If you can eat or drink water with doctor’s permission, you should start from small amount
- In order for you to reduce the chance to be infected, please brush your teeth often or use mouthwash to wash your mouth after surgery
- In order for you to get well soon, the nurses will instruct you to do a special exercise according to your surgery type
- You must remember to take deep breath and cough to help your lung function recover
- In order to reduce your pain, you should take more deep breaths and cough under comfortable circumstances. We will offer you painkiller according to your need and the prescription. If you need painkiller, you can tell the nurses.
- You should follow doctor’s instructions to come back to hospital after leaving hospital
