What does it mean having a fever? A fever is said to have taken place when one’s body temperature exceeds a normal level which is 36.5~37.5 degrees C measured orally, 36~37 degrees C measured in the armpit, and 37~38.1degrees C measure anally. While many factors may induce a fever, example, a flu or tonsillitis, too hot an ambient environment that frustrate body’s ability to dissipate heat such as a heat stroke, can also incur a fever.
How to handle in case of a fever:
- First of all, take a measurement of body temperature to understand what temperature the patient is having.
- Drink plenty of water or fruit juice, ingest easy-to-digest food, avoid drinking coffee or liquor, gargle with saline water.
- When the patient’s oral temperature is above 38 degrees C, have an ice bag compressed on his front or have him sleep on an iced pillow, adjust the indoor temperature to assist heat dissipation, arrange for a tranquil and cool setting, keep the room well ventilated, let the patient lie down and take a good rest.
- Have the patient clad in light toned, flimsy clothing, keep away from heavy clothing or blank sheet, perspiration that emerges should be wiped clean forthwith, and change to dry clothing.
- Where the patient feels frigid or shivering, he should be protected with sufficient warmth, meantime be given a cup of hot tea or hot boiled water.
- If the body temperature continues in a feverish condition with oral temperature reaching to a point above 38.5 degrees C, or accompanied with other symptoms such as: rubella, pain, diet indisposition, debility or general weakness, he must be referred to a doctor immediately.
- If the patient is a minor with antecedents of fever accompanied with febrile spasmus, he should firstly be given anti-febrile treatment and referred to a doctor forthwith lest spasmus should develop.
- Don’t go buy ready made drugs and input same to alleviate the symptom, for that would serve to cover up the cause and make the diagnosis more difficult, it might give rise to irreversible complications should the worse come.
