  1. Upper respiratory tract infection is what is commonly referred to as a cold or flu, of which more than 90% of the incidence is induced by virus and which is manifested by fits of fever lasting on and off for 1 to 7 days, other symptoms like coughing, sniveling, stuffy nose will normally subside in one to two weeks and the case is recovered.
  2. Drugs prescribable to treat a cold or flu are indicated essentially to alleviate the symptoms, they ca hardly shorten the course.
  3. Note and guard against the following complications in the course of a cold or flu:
    (1) Otitis media: elevated fever lasting in excess of 3 days, ear pain, becoming restive in the case of a youngling patient, scratching its ears all the while;
    (2) Sinusitis: sniveling for more than 10 days without noticeable letup, the inspissated yellow-greenish sniveling complicated with coughing, severe stuffy nose and headache;
    (3) Pneumonia: elevated and persistent fever complicated with aggravated coughing, short breathing and degradation of appetite;
    (4) Meningitis: neck stupor, severe headache, vomitus, photophobia, persistent fever, and eventually loss of consciousness;
  4. A common cold doesn’t need the intake of any antibiotics, all that the patient need to do is to drink more of water, take more of rest, avoid presence in a public occasion during the cold prevailing period. Symptoms like coughing, sputum, sniveling or stuffy nose can be prescribed for medicament treatment dependent on the severity, to help alleviate the indisposition.
  5. It is easiest for a common cold virus to spread by way of nasal or guttural duct secretions, and the sureset way of prevention is to wash both hands as often as possible, refrain from sharing towel or personal body cleansing effects with others.
