The “Baby-Friendly Hospital” initiative is a global movement spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF since 1991. Its aim is to establish a healthcare environment where breastfeeding is the standard practice, ensuring that every baby receives the best possible start in life.

The joint declaration by the World Health Organization and UNICEF regarding breastfeeding and maternity services establishes the mission for Baby-Friendly Hospitals. Maternity institutions and hospitals that adhere to the key principles outlined in the declaration are designated as Baby-Friendly Hospitals. This designation serves as a reminder to the public to prioritize and support healthy infant feeding practices while also respecting every mother’s right to breastfeed.
